5 Tips to Improve Your Tennis Footwork

Michelle Okhremchuk2 min read

Good footwork is the foundation of every great tennis shot. Here are five essential tips to improve your movement on the court.

1. Stay on Your Toes

The ready position starts with being on the balls of your feet. This allows you to move quickly in any direction. Flat-footed players are always a step behind.

2. Use the Split Step

The split step is a small hop timed to your opponent's contact with the ball. It loads your muscles for explosive movement. Every professional player uses it — and you should too.

3. Practice Lateral Movement

Tennis is a lateral sport. Practice side shuffles, crossover steps, and recovery steps. Set up cones and work on changing direction quickly.

4. Focus on Recovery

After every shot, recover back to the center of the court. Good recovery positioning reduces the distance you need to cover for the next ball.

5. Train Off the Court

Agility ladder drills, jump rope, and plyometric exercises all build the quick feet you need on court. Even 15 minutes of footwork training per day makes a huge difference.

At MO Tennis Academy, footwork is a core part of every program — from Red Ball beginners to competitive players.
